Chapter 15

As Marty watched Nate cut doggedly into his salad, she really regretted suggesting that Jared Nye could be involved in Nate's attack. The idea obviously troubled him, and it wasn't manifesting itself in just his attitude toward his salad. His whole demeanor had changed.

Before, he'd been charming and funny, and now he'd grown silent, preoccupied.

She finished the bite of her own salad and said lightly, "Did I ever tell you about the time I had a photo shoot in Ecuador?"

Nate looked up from his greens, frowning as though she were a madwoman.

"I know I've never told you," she informed him. "I'm trying to make blithe and amusing conversation. Work with me."

He smiled slightly. "Why, no, you haven't ever told me about your photo shoot in Ecuador."

She feigned surprise. "Really? I could have sworn I had. Well, let me tell you now. I was on a shoot in this remote village near a national park beach called Los Frailes, which is where the actual shoot was taking

place. Los Frailes is unbelievably beautiful, with white sand beaches, blue, blue water, and these soaring sandstone bluffs.

"But the village where I was staying was really amazing too, with cabins made out of materials like bamboo cane and tagua palm leaves. Some of the cabins were actually built in the trees. It was so wild, but so beautiful. The village didn't actually have any running water except for a sort of bathhouse/laundromat on the outskirts of the town—and by laundromat, I mean big tub-type thing to both bathe in and hand wash your clothes."

"Is this a true story? Or are you just making this up for my amusement?"

"It's true," she assured him.

"Models don't get better digs than tree houses?" he asked skeptically.

"Don't knock it until you've tried it," she told him, then continued on with her story. "So, I had gone to the bathhouse/laundromat with a sack full of laundry to wash. The bag wasn't too heavy on the way there. But once the clothes were wet, they were considerably heavier."

"There wasn't a dryer in this place?"

"Well, if there were, don't you think I would have used it?" she pointed out reasonably.

"I don't know. Did you have enough quarters?"

"Shh," she warned. "You're ruining the mood of the story."

He clamped his lips together in a great show of being quiet.

She watched him for a few moments just to be sure he would continue to behave himself. A hint of a smile tugged at those beautifully shaped lips, revealing a brief glimpse of the appealing creases that bracketed his mouth when he smiled fully.

Focus, she told herself and forced her gaze to his eyes. They glittered like topazes at the bottom of a glass of champagne.

She stared at his shoulder.

"So... Where was I?"

"At a bathhouse with a heavy sack."

She focused on his face and found him grinning outright. God, he had a gorgeous smile. But she quickly reprimanded him again. "Eew! You're making this story sound really disturbing."

"Sorry." He suppressed his smile and looked appropriately contrite.

"So,
